Which Sealy mattress is right for you?

If you sleep on your back or front, or you have back pain, go for the Alford or the Mellbreak. Both are firm, both are orthopaedic, and both are designed around spinal alignment. The Mellbreak has extra lumbar support built into the centre and is double-sided, which means it lasts longer when properly maintained. The Alford is the simpler, no-fuss option.

If you sleep on your side, or you just don’t like a very firm feel, the Memory Essential is the one. It has the same PostureTech spring core underneath but with a layer of MemorySense® memory foam on top, which softens and moulds to your shape. This helps take the edge off pressure points at the hips and shoulders. Still supportive, just not as rigid.

Not sure which you are? You’re probably a back or combination sleeper who’d get on well with the Memory Essential. It’s the most versatile of the three and suits the widest range of sleepers.

All three come with a 60-night comfort trial from MattressOnline. Sleep on it for at least 30 nights and if it’s not right, you can swap it.

Everything you need to know about Sealy

Who are Sealy

Sealy have been making mattresses since 1881. Originally in the US, but the brand has been part of the UK sleep industry since 1974. For most of that time, Sealy UK was actually part of the Silentnight Group, who held the licence to manufacture Sealy mattresses here. The two brands were, in effect, made under the same roof.

In 2020 Silentnight decided to close the Sealy factory in Cumbria as a cost-cutting measure. At this point, Tempur Sealy stepped in, bought the operation, and Sealy UK became fully independent.

Since then the Cumbria factory has been reinvested in and Sealy have effectively relaunched in the UK with a stronger product range than before.

Why does Sealy cost more?

Two things: the spring system and the testing.

Sealy invests heavily in their own patented PostureTech spring system and they test every mattress specifically for back support before it goes to market. You’re also getting a longer-lasting mattress. Spend a little more now, replace it less often.

Sealy's technology - explained simply

PostureTech Springs
Sealy’s own patented spring system, and because it’s patented, no other brand can use it. The clever bit is how they respond to weight: they get progressively firmer the more pressure is applied. So where your body is heaviest (hips and lower back), the springs push back harder. Where it’s lighter, they’re gentler. Every Sealy mattress is engineered to keep your spine level, which is why they’re particularly good for back pain and why so many physiotherapists recommend the brand.

MemorySense® Memory Foam
Sealy’s own formulation of memory foam. It reacts to your body heat and weight, softening and contouring to your shape to reduce pressure points. The ® means it’s Sealy’s own registered material, not generic memory foam. It’s designed to be responsive without trapping heat.

EdgeGuard
Reinforced support around the edge of the mattress. Without it, the sides of a mattress collapse when you sit on them or sleep close to the edge. EdgeGuard means you can use the full surface comfortably. This is useful for couples and anyone who tends to drift towards the side during the night.

PowerPack
This is extra support built into the lumbar zone of the Mellbreak (the area under your lower back). It creates a firmer band in the middle where most of your weight sits, which makes it particularly good for people with lower back issues.

Soft white fibres / synthetic fibres
This just means polyester-based comfort fillings, the same material used in quality duvets and pillows. They’re breathable, resilient, hypoallergenic, and hold their shape well. Nothing to worry about.

Posturepedic
Sealy’s premium range. Same core PostureTech technology, but with higher spring counts, more advanced comfort layers, and longer guarantees. Usually more expensive, too. The three mattresses here are from Sealy’s Classics range. The sweet spot for budget buyers who want the Sealy quality without the Posturepedic price tag.

Do Sealy do pocket springs?

Sealy’s budget range doesn’t heavily feature pocket springs. Instead, they’ve invested in making their PostureTech coil system better than a standard open coil. Unlike a basic open coil, PostureTech springs are engineered to respond to your body weight rather than push back uniformly. The result is better spinal alignment than a standard open coil and, Sealy would argue, better back support than many pocket spring systems.

The one area where pocket springs have an edge is motion isolation. Each spring moving independently means less disturbance when your partner moves. If that’s your main concern, the Mellbreak’s EdgeGuard and robust construction give you the best motion control of the three, but for pure partner disturbance reduction, pocket sprung mattresses generally have the advantage. Our Silentnight page covers good pocket spring options at a similar price.

Are Sealy mattresses recyclable?

Yes, all three on this page are 100% recyclable at the end of their life. No part goes to landfill. MattressOnline also offers a paid old mattress collection and recycling service at checkout if you need your current mattress taken away at the same time.

Where's the cheapest place to buy a Sealy mattress?

Sealy uses fairly consistent naming across retailers, which makes price comparison straightforward.

MattressOnline and MattressNextDay are our go-to for Sealy. They offer competitive pricing, free next-day delivery, and proper comfort trials (60 nights and 100 nights respectively). Costco is also worth checking if you’re a member, particularly during sale events.

Sale and clearance sections are always worth a quick look too. Sealy doesn’t refresh its ranges as frequently as some brands, but when they do, older models get discounted and you can sometimes pick up a higher-spec mattress at a lower price.

What is the best Sealy mattress for back pain?

The Mellbreak Ortho Plus. It has the most support features of the three – PowerPack lumbar support, EdgeGuard, and a firm orthopaedic feel. The review base is large enough to be genuinely reliable. The Alford is also a solid choice at a lower price.

What guarantee do Sealy mattresses come with?

All three on this page carry a 5-year guarantee from Sealy. If you look after them properly (rotate regularly, and use a mattress protector) they should comfortably last 7 to 10 years.

Where are Sealy mattresses made?

All three are handcrafted in the UK and approved by the National Bed Federation.

What sizes do Sealy mattresses come in?

Single, Small Double, Double, King, and Superking in standard UK sizes. The Memory Essential and Mellbreak also come in Superking Zip & Link.

Can I get next-day delivery?

Yes, both MattressOnline and MattressNextDay offer free next-day delivery across most of mainland UK.
